Home for the Holidays

Every thanksgiving, my Nana and Poppop come to visit. With the virus, we will be unable to see each other this year. I am beyond thankful for my health and safety throughout this virus, but this doesn’t mean that it isn’t hard for me sometimes with all of the precautions I need to take because of my condition. You might have already read my blog on the perks of quarantine, but this one will be a bit different. Keep reading to learn what the holidays will look like for me this year.

Last night, I was thinking back to last year around this time. My Nana and Poppop had just arrived to New York City for Thanksgiving and they picked me up from school for the few days before it was time for Thanksgiving break. I remember always getting so excited to see them after a long day at school. This year, it won’t be happening because of COVID-19 but perhaps, we will eat Thanksgiving dinner together over Zoom, everyone’s new reality.

The holidays are coming up, and if I’m being honest, I am not looking forward to spending them stuck inside my house. I will miss seeing all of the city lights at Christmas time with my friends and family. I will miss ice skating (in my wheelchair which was something I actually tried for the first time last Christmas!), and even watching people ice skate at Bryant Park. I could go on and on, but I think you get the idea. My family and I will try to see some Christmas lights in the safety of driving around in our van, and if the weather cooperates, we may be able to get our first real Christmas tree at our lake house!

As a teenage girl being on social media quite often, it can be hard to see some people hanging out all the time while I am just looking through a screen.

I couldn’t even tell you how many times a day I see groups of people without masks, hugging, and that is not okay. I am incredibly happy that Joe Biden has been elected as our next president, and am glad to hear that he has already put a team together to try to stop this virus from spreading any further.

As you are probably aware of, we are going in to our second wave of the virus, and even NYC public schools are considering shutting down for the second time. It will be like March 2020 all over again, and I have never wanted to go to school and see my friends more then I do now! Quick reminder to continue wearing masks and social distancing! And, please stay home for the holidays. We all need to play our part in keeping each other safe!
